COURSE DESCRIPTION:This seminar provides a comprehensive explanation of the 2015 International Residential Code (IRC) Wood Wall bracing requirements. The seminar will focus on basic requirements and clarify the application of wall bracing provisions in the IRC wall bracing Sections R602.10 thru R602.12.

Goal: Participants will successfully apply the provisions of the 2015 IRC to case studies involving bracing requirements for wood-framed residential structures in their region.

Course Objectives:

  • Identify the forces that act on a house.
  • Describe the history of bracing and how it works.
  • Determine how much bracing is required, and how adjustment factors are applied.
  • Recognize special considerations for bracing.
  • Apply attachment details, and pony and cripple wall details.
  • Apply wall bracing provisions of the IRC.
  • Describe the physical limits under which bracing can be used.

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Must have previous experience in the construction industry or trades with a minimum of one (1) year experience as Code Enforcement Inspector or Building Inspector. Currently hold or have the ability to obtain the following International Code Council Certifications within six (6) months of hire: Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector, Residential Building Inspector, Residential Energy Inspector, Residential Plumbing Inspector, and Residential Mechanical Inspector. Valid driver’s license required. Basic computer competency with Windows and a variety of software programs to perform calculations, enter data, and produce documents required. Jeff Carter, MABOI Director, bestows the Gerald “Jerry” Wessels Education Award award to Dave Kasl

Dave Kasl has 40+ years of experience in the two largest regional jurisdictions: St. Louis County and the City of St. Louis.  He has a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University and is a Registered Architect in the State of Missouri.  While currently employed at St. Louis County, he oversees the permit processing and plan review staff of 50 that performs 40,000 inspections per year and conducts 12,000 plan reviews.  Since 1990, he has been an Adjunct Instructor for the Building Inspection and Code Enforcement Program at St. Louis Community College, where he has taught 36 courses over the past 25 years.

With over 31 years of experience, Russell Thornburg brings to the classroom first-hand knowledge of many aspects of the building industry from the basics of home ownership, to general contracting, to field inspection and plans examiner.  For more than twenty years he was self-employed as a licensed general contractor and has over 17 years of experience working for municipalities in the state of Minnesota and Kansas.  During this time he began teaching Building Inspection Technology programs for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, as well as Continuing Education Seminars from around the country and ICC chapters.  After a short stint serving as Program Director for Johnson County Contractor Licensing of KS he has returned to Texas and now writes and develops code seminars and presents these programs for various organizations, including municipalities, institutes, ICC chapters, Home Builders Associations, and industries throughout the United States.
